Groceries - July 11th

(Yes this was taken on my bed...only place with good light at night)

Groceries: Goal = only spending $25 every two weeks.

Now I have to be realistic, this wont include drinking or going out money. Its all about priorities...yes I will probably drink more money than I eat...working on that one.

Yeah, its going to be a challenge, but not as hard as one would think. I just have to be smart with what I buy and where I buy it. For a few months now I've been doing a lot of grocery shopping at the 99 cent store. Not the most glamorous of places, but they have a few good hidden deals. Its not organic stuff by any means, but right now I cant really complain. I also get a lot of meats, breads and stuff like that at my local grocery store when they are marked down (50-75%). I just freeze it or use it that week. I just kinda eat whats on sale or combined what I can in a crock-pot for that week.

Today I picked up:
  • Green grapes
  • Red grapes
  • Cauliflower
  • Dozen large eggs
  • Lean sausage
  • Spicy sausage
  • Bag of fresh spinach
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Bag of Peaches
  • 2 lb bag of Onions
  • Jennie-o Turkey hotdogs
  • Bottle of Vinegar
  • Garlic (6-7 bunches-thanks FB!)
  • Two Eggplants
  • Large bag of baby carrots
  • 2 Boxes of life cereal
  • Roasting pan (for Lulu and her t-training)
  • Oxy-clean and laundry detergent (only really need every 5-6 months)
  • Cat litter

The Grand total......

$22.39

The only thing I can't pick up at the 99 cent store is Milk and coffee creamer.

updated design

Good morning everyone.

Just a little update post on my part. I changed the design on my blog yesterday night. It isn't screaming PF, but it's me. I used a new blogger template and changed the header image. (so if you're reading this though rss readers, come on over and check it out)

If anyone needs any photoshop work done, let me know. Or even if you just want a new header or even if you just want me to find images for you.

photography

I've discovered mixing texture with photography and now I cant stop. Examples above. (I shot the photos as well)

I'm actually shooting a wedding for these two in a few weeks, but I'm not actually making any money off of it. I'm thinking of it more as practice, especially because I wont be the only photographer there. Also, I think I would have a panic attack if I was the only one responsible for capturing memories that special.

Plus I'm still using my jobs camera, so I feel a little iffy making money off of it.

I was wondering if I should add photography to my portfolio? Also when do I decide to start charging people? After I buy my own camera completely?

Meet Lulu

Meet Lulu. She has attitude, loves to mess up my place, loves to sleep on my head, and doesn't care one bit. She also magically has the ability to mess with her stitches even with a huge cone on her head.

what you all have been waiting for....my apartment!

let me take you though a little guided tour...
This is what you see when you open the door. The bookshelf I got from a guy on Craigslist, and the bike is a 1983 Free Spirit that I got from my mom. When I got the bike it was in a very sad condition, and I can proudly say I worked on it myself. It still needs a lot of work, but its great for short trips in downtown. I also have another (actual) road bike that I am working on, but have no idea where I am going to keep it. (and yes I do need it, since it will be 1000x better for long distance trips) Side note, I love my bright pink helmet.

If you do a little turn you can see my "Living room". I use "" because in reality, I technically only have two rooms, bathroom and main room. Ah, the love of studio living.

Turn a little more to the right and this is where the magic happens....well sort of. The imac is my life. That grey thing in front of my keyboard is a Wacom tablet, and I recommend it for anyone that designs. It is an extension of my hand. The desk is a thrift store find ($10) that I painted barn house red. The file cabinet was a donation from my dads work and keeps me semi-organized.

I consider walls around my desk fair game. It will be the only spot in my apartment that I clutter with work, inspiration, jewelry, photos, calendars, and anything else that I can tack on. I also put everything I am working on freelance wise on one clipboard and hang it up to remind me to work. Oh and that wall filled with jewelry? I got the idea from living in a tiny room with my sister and not having a place to keep my jewelry. I just use tacks and put them in a semi-straight line. (just be prepared to lose feeling in your fingers shortly after)

The chair was a Christmas gift from my dad about 3 years ago. It is covered in black duck tape (the ex from hell broke it), but I cant seem to get rid of it.On the other side of my large 6x6 bookshelf is my bed. I painted the side of my bookshelf to match my "kitchen" wall, and adds a bit of color with the red pillows/sheets. The walls are my favorite part of my apartment. They came painted this dark blue color (eh...ok, very gender neutral), but I added a light gray IKEA cherry blossom wall stickers. Because of my neurotic designer brain it took me about 4 hours to do.The light that is hanging over my bed used to be in the center of my "living room" before I moved all of my furniture around. Now its off center, but I kinda like it that way. Or I just don't want to move it....cant decide.

The red sheets are from IKEA and I got the brown pillows and comforter from a co-worker. The striped pillows I stole from my sister. The little side table holding the vases I got from IKEA and stained myself. The bed frame I got off of Craigslist for $40.
Just because I love my bed so much you get to see another picture of it. I used to buy fresh flowers every week for the vases, but due to lack of funds I am temporarily using nice fake flowers that I bought on mark-down for 23 cents.Shot from my bed. The white rug was a gift from my dad, and even though I don't have a vacuum I've found that a broom works just as well. Good workout. The couch I picked up from a girl off of Craigslist for $75 and covered it with brown fabric. The couch might seem large for the space, but I really needed something my friends can crash on. One friend was staying over every week for three months or so. I'm a diagonal sleeper, so sharing a bed is out of the question. :) Since I am cheap, my TV only has free basic cable, but is hooked up to a DVD player, PS2, and Game Cube. I also have my wireless Internet router in the far right square. The shelf that is holding my TV is actually a IKEA LACK bookcase that bought in the as is section($35), painted black and flipped on its side. The side table is from IKEA ($15) and I painted the top to match my kitchen wall as well.So I normally don't spend so much on a plate ($6), but I saw this in IKEA and fell in love.See how I have just a "kitchen" wall. I really don't cook that much (unless you count the microwave), and I would rather have more space to live in.

Blue! (oh and I really don't like the electric stove. I already burn things, I don't need any more help.)Shot from the entrance of my bathroom. I'm on the 12th floor, so I get a lot of light during the day. Not much of a view, but cheaper...and I get to look into other peoples windows when I'm bored. Last but not least, the bathroom. I love the large circular frame from IKEA. I put a piece of white and brown fabric in it. The little frames I also bought from IKEA and painted black.

So that's it. A little look into my humble but expensive apartment. Its still a big work in progress, but its at least presentable. Oh and no one is seeing my walk-in-closet. It is a mess. :)

Phone wars

I've decided that I cant buy a new phone till I pay off my credit card.

Now my cell phone bill is around $50 a month.

I get:
450 minutes (I only use about 200-300 a month)
1500 text messages (I only use about 300-400 a month)

Without the 20% discount I get every month, it would cost me around $65 a month.

My dilemma is that At&t blows. I'm not in a contract, but the minimum minutes I can get is 450, and for text messaging I have to pick 300 a month or 1500 a month. Big jump, right?

I want to switch to a new carrier, but then I am locked into a new contract. I also want to use this opportunity to get a nice phone. I'm the type that I always go for the cheap, free phones. I'm never happy afterward.

After some calculations (and billshrink.com) I figured out how much it would cost me two years down the line.

Total monthly cost of Two year Contract (not including taxes):
At&t: $85 X 24 months = $2,040 (iphone $199)
Sprint: $69 X 24 months = $1,679 (Palm Pre $199)
T-mobile: $65 X 24 months = $1,560 (G1 $149)

Logically you would assume that I should go with T-Mobile. But I'm torn between the G1 and Pre. Even though I love the iphone, I have to pass on it just because of At&t.

One of my coworkers showed me his Palm Pre and it was beautiful. It has a normal headphone jack, touch screen, physical qwerty keyboard, and multitask. I really think I will go for it when the time comes.

Now I just have to pick up more freelance to pay for it....
(blog re-design anyone?)

Bored Beast

I realized that I get bored very easily. And when I am bored, I spend money that I don't really have. Also, I need to work on hands-on projects. I love designing, but it doesn't tame the bored beast.

I get very restless and always need to feel accomplished. I am always trying new DIY projects, making jewelry or even working on my bike. I am not content watching tv/movies or siting inside all day. When I don't tame the bored beast I get the urge to buy stuff. Large, expensive stuff. Bad.

So I was bored this weekend, and after working on freelance for a bit, moved around all of the furniture in my apartment. Before my bed was tucked away in a corner of my small studio, now its in a sunny, cheery spot. I even moved a 6 ft x 6 ft bookcase across my apartment all by myself.

Now my next project is to paint the wall of my "kitchen". I want to add a bit of color, and make my now drab kitchen more lively.

This color to be exact:
As a side-note, I'm still working on my bike, and need to take it down to the Bike Kitchen one day this week. Its a bit squeaky, and the front wheel spokes need tightening, but its great for short trips in downtown. I just need a real road bike soon if I want to take longer trips in the city.

Now I only use my car once a week on average.

(I know I was tagged, just procrastinating. :) )

checking account

I got an offer in the mail yesterday for $100 if I sign up for a Chase (previously Washington Mutual) checking account. I had an account with them in the past, loved the service, and didn't want to pass up an offer like that.

So I walked my way in the Chase banking center, started talking to the banker and while he is filling out my application he says "Oh....have you had an account with us in the past?".

Shoot.

I have to bring up the great story of how I had a joint account with an EX boyfriend, he proceeded to overdraft the account, leave town and I was left to pay for the overdraft charges that I didn't even cause.

The Chase guy seems sorry he had to ask, then calls their customer care line. After about 20 minutes of waiting, he gets off the phone with a sad look on his face.

Basically, I was told that I was reported to the "banking checking system" and that I couldn't open up a new account for 7 years. 7 Flipin years for something I DIDNT EVEN DO? I can get a million credit cards, but not a checking account?

What?

After hearing that I was mentally throwing darts at my ex's head, and trying to hide under the desk at the same time.

If that doesn't put a damper on your day I don't know what will.

I'm going to make myself feel better....eat some ice cream and update my Candi Clutter site.
